As you are aware, we have implemented many programs this year in order to meet the needs of our students. The Fast ForWord Program has been used to develop the phonetic and listening skills of many of our students. Classroom teachers and support staff have also used manipulatives, the Fundations Program, and leveled reading materials to strengthen the skills of students who are in their classes. The staff has also made use of websites, Smart Board technology, and grouping techniques to address the needs of our students. The results of the MAP Testing Program have also been used to set goals for our students and differentiate instruction.
The staff also recently administered DIBELS (Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills), which is a test that measures children’s reading fluency and comprehension. Students who demonstrated difficulties in reading will be provided with guided instruction in small group settings during the school day. They will also be closely monitored during the remainder of the year and their progress will be measured when we administer DIBELS later this year.
As we approach Spring, teachers in Grades 3-5 are busy preparing students for the upcoming State Assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. They have been using a variety of materials to review concepts that will be assessed on the tests. This year, the State Assessments are longer and more challenging than they were in the past. Please encourage your child to complete all homework assignments to prepare for the assessments. In addition, stay in close contact with your child’s teacher and take advantage of the before-school tutoring sessions if your child is having difficulty in Language Arts or Mathematics. Having your child read for a minimum of fifteen minutes each day will also assist in the development of comprehension and fluency. Memorizing basic math facts will also enhance your child’s computational and problem solving skills.
As always, your cooperation and support of our instructional program is greatly appreciated.
